The history of the Congregation of the Union of the Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary springs from a response to the spirit at a particular time, in a particular culture. Nano Nagle founded the Institute of the Charitable Instruction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, on Christmas Eve, 1775 in Cork, Ireland.
She was born into a wealthy, catholic family and had the advantage of an education in France, at a time when unjust laws deprived the less advantaged of schooling and education in Ireland. Nano heard the call of God in the cry of the poor, condemned as they were to ignorance, superstition and loss of faith. Conscious of her own weakness, she resisted the call, but after much suffering and heart searching Nano responded. Nano, true to her family's coat of arms,
